The Morenci Education Foundation (MEF) was founded with a vision to support the students and educators of Morenci Area Schools. On August 1, 2002, a group of dedicated community leaders came together to explore the possibility of establishing an education foundation. With enthusiasm and commitment, they began the process of gaining official recognition. In November 2002, the MEF was granted non-profit incorporation status, and by February 2003, it had received official 501(c)(3) approval from the IRS.

Since its inception, the MEF has focused on two key areas:

1. Mini-Grants for Educators – MEF awards grants to teachers and staff, enabling them to purchase materials and resources that enhance classroom instruction. These grants foster innovative educational opportunities that might not be possible within the school’s general operating budget. From books and technology to hands-on learning materials and field trips, MEF-funded projects impact student learning. To date, MEF has awarded 209 grants totaling $85,521 in support of enriching education.

   
   

2. Scholarships for Students – MEF is also committed to supporting Morenci graduates by providing scholarships to help fund their educational journeys. As an umbrella organization, MEF manages scholarship funds from various local resources, ensuring that financial assistance reaches deserving students. Since its founding, MEF has awarded 169 scholarships totaling $160,250, helping graduates pursue their academic and career goals.
